Step 2
The dog keeps the leash loose while you stand in place for 5 seconds,then walk 5 steps forward and turn around.
1. Set up a small room with no distractions, C/T, NO LEASH
(a) saunter casually around the area. C/T every time she's within a couple of feet of you.
1. Hand the treat from your left hand or drop the treat on the floor as you walk
(b) As she learns that near you is the best place to be, you can C/T only when she's near you AND on your left side Work 3 or 4 sessions before moving on
(c) Put a buckle collar on with a leash. C/T when she's on your left side and close enough to you that the leash is loose. Resist the urge to control the leash.
1. Work the capture session several more times, C/T when she’s on your left side and close enough to keep the leash loose.
2. Stand in one spot and C/T for being in one spot.
3. Toss the treat just a little away from her; not far enough to tighten her leash, but enough she has to take a step to get it; then 2 steps, 3 steps.
4. After she understands, make it a bit harder;C/T for hitting the spot 3 times; the fourth time take a half step forward.
5. Stop and wait for her. Do Not look at her. You’ll C/T when she moves forward, C/T
6. If she doesn’t move forward, put slight pressure on the leash;
7. Wait for her to figure it out
8. When she takes a step to relieve the pressure, C/T, tossing the treat up closer to you
(d) Gradually hold back a bit so she has a chance to SEE you move, and starts to realize she is moving with you, not following you.
1. Ladder the distance you move.
2. C/T for finding your stationary position 3 times.
3. then take a full step forward. C/T for her coming forward to find or hold position;
4. then take 2 steps forward, C/T her for finding or holding position
5. then take 3 steps, 4 steps...
6. When she can stand with you, staying with you when you take 5 steps forward, C/T again for being in position while you stand still.
7. TURN a quarter to your right; C/T again for moving her position; can she find it?
If she can't , put a tiny bit of pressure on leash again and wait for her to respond.
8. Repeat C/T several more times for finding position while you stand
9. Repeat C/T several more times for finding position after you’ve turned.
10. Slow down and let her see you turn so she can turn with you.
11. Try turning 180 degrees to your right.
12. Start putting it all together. This will be more dificult, so make everything else easier.
13. Stand still for 2 seconds
14. Take two steps forward
15. turn 90 degrees, C/T if she’s still in position
16. or take 3 steps forward, turn 90 degrees right, C/T
17. If the leash tightens, go back and explain the single behaviors again.
Who What When Where (BMO)
Reteach Step 2 in every room of your house; use Chutes and ladders to work up taking 10 steps, turn, take 10 steps back.
