Dog confidently walks end to end on a flat board raised 3 inches off the floor. (Done with no food or clicker in the area). There is no cue for this behavior.
Easy Beginnings
Start by placing your 8-inch wide by 7-foot long board flat on the ground in a stable, non-wobbly position.
Shaping the Behavior
Step 1
Click for your dog looking at the board
Step 2
Click for you dog moving toward the board
Step 3
Click for touching the board
Step 4
Click for putting a paw on the board
Step 5
Click for walking over the board
Step 6
Toss the treat toward the ends of the board to set your dog up to successfully enter and exit on the ends of the board
Luring the Behavior
Step 1
Walk casually beside the board lengthwise
a. Keep leash loose
Step 2
Click when your dog steps on the board
OR
Step 3
Toss your treats right on the board in the beginning
Step 4
Click and toss the treat off the board so you set your dog up to get back ON the board
Remember that the click ends the behavior, so when your dog gets OFF the board, you are allowing him/her to get back on the board again
Step 5
Place the board in a narrow hallway or make a chute out of an exercise pen so that your dog has to go on the board to get from one room to another
Step 6
Raise the board 3 inches off the ground (be sure it is stable)
Remember when you make one part of the behavior more difficult, make everything else easier.
Step 7
Begin back at Step 2 and start Shaping the behavior with the board raised.
